City Ordinance
City of Corpus Christi Ordinance Section 23-68 states:
No person who owns or occupies any lot or parcel of land in the city limits may permit or allow weeds or brush 12” or higher to grow on the lot or parcel of land. In addition, municipal ordinance also requires certain conditions relating to stagnant water, filth, carrion, weeds, rubbish, brush, and other objectionable, unsightly, unwholesome, or unsanitary matter or conditions.
City of Corpus Christi Ordinance Section 23-70 states:
Owners or occupants of any lot or parcel of land which violates the City of Corpus Christi Ordinance Section 23-68 must correct the conditions which are in violation within seven (7) days of notice. Failure to correct these conditions will result in the Director of Public Health, the Director of Housing and Community Development, or the Director of Solid Waste Services, or their designees to:
- Do the work or make the improvements required, and
- Charge the owner or occupant of the property for these services.
With this requirement to pay for these mandatory services, the city may file a lien for the cost of administrative and corrective expenses to remedy the violations. Additionally, criminal charges may be filed in Municipal Court against the owner and occupant for violations of the City Code of Ordinances. Under Section 1-6 of the Code of Ordinances, those involved may be subject to a maximum penalty of $2,000 and each day a violation continues may constitute a separate and distinct offense.
If another violation of the same nature occurs within twelve (12) months of the initial Notice of Violation, the City may perform these services without any additional Notices of Violation. All services conducted by the City or their designees will result in a lien against the property until they are paid for in full along with any additional fines or administrative fees.
